Session 3: How are we going to supply the goods needed by humanity?

Level 6

The geography and patterns of production and consumption are changing quickly. Population growth, urbanization, demographics and customers’ preferences themselves are driving change, creating new challenges and opportunities.

The world will need to feed, shelter and provide energy, water and goods to an additional 3.5 billion inhabitants at the end of the century. Thankfully, new business concepts combined with novel technologies are enabling innovative solutions.

  • How are we going to feed people? Where will food come from?
  • Will local production become a norm in the future? For which types of goods, food items and resources?
  • Can the circular economy become the new standard for the design of value chains? What is needed for that?
  • Can emerging nations lead in new consumption paradigms?
  • How can sustainability be coupled with consumption?
